Tigres defeats Chivas with Córdova goal

Guadalajara fell again to the university team at the Volcán
Monterrey, Mexico - Tigres UANL started the 2024 Apertura tournament with a 1-0 victory over Chivas Guadalajara at the Estadio Universitario, better known as "El Volcán." The match was marked by the return of striker André-Pierre Gignac after a long injury layoff.
The only goal of the match was scored by midfielder Sebastián Córdova in the 72nd minute, with an assist from Gignac. The goal was a result of a well-executed counterattack by the home team, which caught Chivas out of position.
Guadalajara had a chance to equalize in the dying minutes of the match, but a header from forward Santiago Ormeño went just wide of the post. The win gives Tigres three points and puts them in joint-second place in the early Apertura standings, while Chivas remains without a point in last place.
Tigers will next face Necaxa in the second round of the Apertura on Saturday, July 30, while Chivas will host Atlas on Sunday, July 31.
